  The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kayode Ariwoola, has urged judicial officers in the country not to replace the position of the law with “public opinions, sentiments or emotions” in deciding the cases that come before them.   The CJN spoke on Monday in an obvious reaction to the criticisms and condemnations which trailed some Court of Appeal rulings on governorship and National Assembly election petitions in the past two weeks, leading to protests and demand for a probe of some judges for corruption.

How Over 6,800 Cases Gathered Dust In Nigerian Supreme Court, Dragged On Since 2006

  No fewer than 6800 cases at the Supreme Court of Nigeria are suffering neglect with some appeals dating back to 2006 and being heard for the first time in 2022. The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, recently bemoaned how the Supreme Court was grappling with the delayed cases. There is a shortfall of justices in the Supreme Court, with only 13 left on the bench despite that the constitution provided 21, which has widened the gap in the ratio of judges to litigants in Nigeria.
