CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign s city council is recommending approximately $3.2 million in budget cuts for the 2021-22 fiscal year in order to make up for a budget gap stemming from the pandemic. The News-Gazette reports leaders are planning to reorganize staff and not fill some vacant positions. This would lead to about 19 full-time positions being removed, with six of them coming from Champaign s voluntary separation program. A total of 35 people have applied for voluntary separation. Champaign Finance Director Kay Nees said only six voluntary separations got approval partly because the city had a focus on removing vacancies before making cuts to current staff. Nees said Champaign was helped by a higher-than-expected level of sales tax revenue and funds that came from Illinois through the federal CARES Act. ....
