Puerto Rico's famous cats to be removed from historic site

Hundreds of stray cats that roam a historic seaside tourist area of Puerto Rico’s capital will be removed over the coming year, officials say. The plan to remove the cats, who are considered both a delight and a nuisance, was unveiled Tuesday by the U.S. National Park Service. The federal agency says it will contract an animal welfare organization to remove the 200 cats estimated to live on the 75-acre San Juan National Historic Site that the agency operates in Old San Juan. If the organization fails to remove the cats within six months, the National Park Service says it will hire a removal agency. Animal activists have decried the plan.
