Breaking news. tropical storm harvey. and we have dramatic video showing an apparent tornado near houston. this is a massive funnel cloud rolling through a neighborhood in cyprus, just northwest of the city. we don t have a sense of exactly how much damage this storm might have caused just yet, but the local news outlets are saying there appears to be some damage to homes in the area. our teams on the ground continue to dig for new information on that. meantime, let s bring in cnn meteorologist chad myers in the weather center. you talked about the threat of tornadoes as well as other threats out there. absolutely. an enhanced tornado threat, i would say for the next three to four hours over houston proper because of that little flare-up of red and purple there. it s a feeder band of the storm still. a feeder band because it s not that far from the ocean or the gulf of mexico. that gulf is very warm. 84, 85 degrees. even after the storm went over it. before the storm went by, using ....
It s sugarland or cady or houston, no one knows. when you wake up tomorrow is where the real flood lg occur. this is what the radar looks like in about 15 or 20 minutes. then tonight it will continue to spin. see this feeder band right here. there could even be tornados in parts of louisiana tonight as some of these storms roll on shore. now, they re water spout type tornadoes, ef-0s, ef-1s, 105, 100 miles per hour. not like the tornadoes you see in oklahoma in the spring. these are storms that roll off the ocean. they re spinning already because the whole thing is spinning, they hit land and decide to put down a tornado. it happened today, it lot happen again tonight. now get real close to the tv set. focus on this. this is what scares me for tonight. this is what scares me for ....
There. houston. you are really getting rain now. you are in an outside feeder band of what would be a hurricane. it s on land now. so it s a tropical storm. but you still have feeder bands. what does that mean? there s moisture in the gulf of mexico. clearly it s hot. 86. that moisture is being pulled up into houston and it is raining at 2.5 inches per hour. if it rains at your house for four hours, that s ten inches. where is that going to go? into the rivers and bayous and going to flood. we have flash flood warnings going on very, very close to houston, especially just to the west. people saying cars are already stalled out. don t drive in this. this is a dangerous night. this is a night where the rain will continue possibly all night long at one or two inches per hour. you already have eight inches on the ground for sugarland and katy, hobby, about five inches there. the ground s wet. the water s already running off. ....
Up some of the energy, that water was 86 degrees. now it s dying, although not quickly enough for the people of texas. not moving very much either. east-northeast at 2 miles per hour. but we expected that. we knew this storm was going to stall. that s where all the alarm flags went up by now this storm should be in arkansas. it should be gone. the westerly winds should have picked it up and moved it away, but that didn t happen. and that s why we still have this significant threat of big weather tonight, the tornadoes, not that far west of houston. also, though, the significant threat of flooding because the ground is already wet from the 24 hours almost now of rainfall, and it s still raining. the threat tonight still of tornadoes, tornado watch in effect pretty much all night long for houston. but the real threat, i think, is where it has already rained, 5 to 6 inches, up here in the purple, that s over 10. but what s going to happen tonight that feeder band will sit right over houst ....
That s really just happened in the last half hour that wasn t there just two hours ago. no real indication that this was going to happen. a large, large flare-up of severe weather near houston right now. 2 to 3 inch rainfall amounts coming down to the south and west of houston moving into houston proper in the next half hour. there s that line of weather. it s a feeder band of a hurricane. we just don t have a hurricane. but all those bands, all those pinwheel bands that you would see in a tropical storm, now, one, is going to park itself over houston possibly for the next 12 hours. now, there s a threat of tornados the, too, that big red box. that s a tornado watch box. there have been tornadoes today. in fact, the weather service has issued almost 70 tornado warnings since the storm made landfall. 12 of those storms were actually confirmed tornadoed on t ees on ground. this is still a real probability. that purple area, that s 10 ....
