The Rio Blanco County Commissioners made a series of appointments and reappointments to boards Tuesday, approved agreements for services and ratified some letters in opposition to or supporting specific items. Rio Blanco County Commissioners, administrators, staff and volunteers from RBC's various departments, boards and tax districts have met for a combined total of more than 15 hours this month to comb through numbers, review funding requests and set final proposed changes to the 2024 budget based on county goals. The 56 Colorado counties that receive annual payments in lieu of taxes from the federal government saw a slight increase this year, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced Thursday. Overall, the counties received their share of more than $43 million in payments, about $1 million more than last year and $2 million more than in 2019. That means that the six counties in the region also saw slight increases in what they got. âThis yearâs distribution of $43.1 million to 56 counties will help local governments carry out vital services, such as firefighting and police protection, construction of public schools and roads, and search-and-rescue operations,â Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a press release. âOur mission relies on partnerships with U.S. states and territories. These distributions are a great example of our commitment to be good neighbors to the communities we serve.â ....

Letâs first consider that second headline. ....
The amount of money the federal government pays state and local governments through payments in lieu of taxes is not enough, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert says. The Silt Republican has introduced a bill calling on the Department of the Interior to come up with a better formula in determining PILT payments, something that is more realistic in terms of the real market value of the land the payments are based on. âThis act will help counties with significant amounts of non-taxable federal lands,â Boebert said in a press release. âWhile important to rural communities in Coloradoâs 3rd District, PILT payments are a fraction of the dollars counties would receive if they were able to put these lands to productive private use.â ....
