A Fauquier County Circuit Court judge on Thursday granted bail to a Maryland man charged in a hit-and-run accident last month that killed a 2-year-old girl near Opal.
After a brief hearing Thursday morning, Judge Lon E. Farris ordered the release of José Santiago Mendoza, 65, of Bladensburg, on a $5,000 secured bond.
The defendant will return to Fauquier County General District Court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday, March 24. ....

A Maryland man charged in Saturdayâs hit-and-run accident that killed a 2-year-old girl near Opal will remain in jail after a bond hearing Wednesday in Fauquier County General District Court.
Judge Charles F. Sievers initially decided to release José Santiago Mendoza, 65, of Bladensburg, on an unsecured bond, provided he adhered to several conditions.
The judge ordered Mr. Mendoza to give up his passport, live with his sister in Culpeper and not to leave Virginia except for work â pending the caseâs resolution. ....
