Language no barrier when pope and ayatollah spoke of peace

Father Kenneth Doyle By Father Kenneth Doyle • Catholic News Service • Posted May 13, 2021 Q. When the Holy Father and Ayatollah al-Sistani met recently, at the end they stood facing each other and seemed to be talking without an interpreter. What language did they use in order to communicate? (Powhatan, Virginia) A. According to the website of the Jesuit magazine America there was, in fact, an interpreter present. America said in its report on the March 6 meeting that “the two leaders of Christianity and Shia Islam sat beside a small wooden table and spoke with the assistance of the pope’s Palestinian-born translator.”

Why do we repent for sins if Jesus already forgave them?

Father Kenneth Doyle By Father Kenneth Doyle • Catholic News Service • Posted April 30, 2021 Q. I can understand that Jesus died on the cross to reconcile us with the Father, but why do we say that Jesus died to forgive our sins when we have to repent continually for those sins? (city and state withheld) A. The Bible does say that Jesus has forgiven our sins; St. Paul tells us in Colossians 2:13 that “even when you were dead in transgressions … he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions.” But it is perhaps more precise to say that Jesus, by suffering and dying for our redemption, has simply opened for us the possibility of heaven something we could not have done for ourselves.

Holy Name Society isn t a relic of the past – Catholic Philly

Father Kenneth Doyle By Father Kenneth Doyle • Catholic News Service • Posted January 29, 2021 Q. Some of my fondest memories of parenthood include attending, in the 1960s, Mass and a breakfast meeting afterward with my four sons that was sponsored by an organization called the Holy Name Society. It seemed to me an effective way to involve parish families in worship and fellowship. (My boys developed the term “Holy Name Eggs” for the concoction of bacon bits and scrambled eggs that was served.) Does such an organization still exist; and if not, what caused its demise? Could it and should it be revived? (Minong, Wisconsin)
