Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan stunned his country s Christians and Jews by publicly using the slur gavur (infidel), a pejorative designation for non-Muslims, to criticize his political opposition. Such name-calling reflects the systematic discrimination Turkish Christians and Jews face, and can only accelerate their ongoing exodus from a land where they have lived for two millennia. Ankara needs to change not only its rhetoric but also its policy to reverse the alarming trends that have brought religious minority communities to the brink of extinction. ....

The memorial of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek genocide of the 20th century on April 24 is always a solemn day of mourning.
On my maternal line, I am a descendent of genocide survivors. Pre-1915, my family inhabited their indigenous land of Upper Tyari in the Hakkari region of modern day southeastern Turkey. Up until 1915, the Upper Tyari valley alone contained 20 Assyrian settlements, two of which I can trace back my ancestry to: Koh and Rumta.
At the time, the Upper Tyari settlements contained up to 450 Assyrian families and many churches. In a way, my ancestors would have never anticipated the lifestyle that they had always been accustomed to would suddenly cease to exist. An Assyrian priest will spend two years in a Turkish prison for providing food and water to the HPG.
The HPG is the military wing of the Kurdistan Workers Party, and they are classified as a terrorist organisation by the Turkish government.
Christian Today reports, Father Aho is the caretaker of a 1,500 year-old monastery in Southeast Turkey.
A human rights activist has told Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Turkish authorities have been trying to erase Turkey’s Christian heritage.
