The Police Commission is discussing the search for a new police chief. Youll remember the mayor fired Lauren Armstrong back in february for mishandling to officer misconduct cases. Well, this meeting underway for just about an hour now and this meeting really just an opportunity for the public to weigh in on who they would like to see, take the helm of the Oakland Police department. But i can tell you, just based on people that ive spoken to, people making Public Comments so far, that this crowd seems to be largely behind the former chief, Lauren Armstrong. Now, a list of potential candidates was supposed to be submitted during this meeting to the mayor tonight, but amid a protest from several members of the Police Commission

Well as you heard there, the vast majority of people attending tonights town hall very much behind former chief Lauren Armstrong calling for him to be re instated to his position, that being said, there was a Smaller Group on the other side which characterized tonights meeting as less about finding a new chief and more about undermining the mayor. May be at as were digging around that individual crews on scene had hoped for a rescue, but once they reached the construction worker, crews were able to confirm that he had died. It took over two hours and over 50 firefighters working together to effectively reach the individual, evaluate the individual for signs of life. And unfortunately, to two hours into this incident, we are naming this a fatal incident. Next of kin were devastated after learning the news at this point, investigators arent releasing a lot of details about the man who died, but the Citys Department of public works confirmed that the man was working on a city sewer replacement project. The same project, ktvu reports on a month ago, we caught up with crews then working on the project and spotted some of the same crew members at the trench collapse.
