Police Search Home Of Tatar NGO s Leader In Kazan, Summon Him For Questioning March 04, 2021 14:30 GMT Share share Print KAZAN, Russia The chairman of the All-Tatar Public Center (TIU) says police and security officers in Russia s Republic of Tatarstan have searched his home and summoned him for questioning in a case concerning the incitement of hatred. Farit Zakiyev told RFE/RL that police and officers from the Federal Security Service (FSB) came to his apartment in Kazan early on March 4 and searched the premises, confiscating his and his wife s smartphones. Zakiyev said he was informed that the case was launched regarding a 2019 event related to the annual commemoration of Tatars who died during the 1552 siege of the city by Russian troops. ....
Outspoken Tatar Activist Fined For Speech She Says Was Translated Improperly February 10, 2021 10:30 GMT share Print NABEREZHNYE CHELNY, Russia Well-known Tatar writer and activist Fauzia Bairamova has been found guilty of a charge of calling for the violation of the Russian Federation s territorial integrity in a speech that she says was distorted because of translation errors. A court in Tatarstan s second-largest city, Naberezhnye Chelny, on February 9 found Bairamova guilty of the charge and ordered her to pay a 30,000-ruble ($400) fine. Bairamova pleaded not guilty, insisting that the translation of her speech from Tatar into Russian contained errors that distorted the essence of what she told a conference organized by the All-Tatar Public Center (TIU) almost a year ago. ....
Russian Tatar NGO Leader On Hunger Strike To Protest Absurd Shutdown Order February 04, 2021 14:48 GMT Share share Print KAZAN, Russia The chairman of the All-Tatar Public Center (TIU), Farit Zakiyev, has started a hunger strike to protest a move by prosecutors to label his organization in Russia s Tatarstan region extremist and shut it down. Zakiyev started his hunger strike on February 3, calling the official motion, first presented in mid-January, absurd. To declare TIU an extremist organization would mean to declare all Tatar people extremists. It would mean to declare the idea of Tatarstan s statehood and articles of the Russian Constitution on federalism extremist, Zakiyev said in a statement, calling on other members of the TIU to join the hunger strike. ....
