Study Finds Microplastics in 100% of Tested Pennsylvania Waterways — Including 4 in Centre County

A new study led by a statewide environmental nonprofit organization found microplastics in each of 53 Pennsylvania waterways sampled, including four in Centre County.
The report “Microplastics in Pennsylvania,” released Wednesday by PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center found that samples taken from Spring Creek, Slab Cabin Run, Buffalo Run and Cedar Run all contained microplastics tiny pieces of plastic less than 5 millimeters in length.
More than 300 samples were collected from bodies of water in every corner of the state for the study, which used a citizen-science protocol developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that has been implemented across the country to identify microplastic contamination. ....

'They are everywhere': Microplastics pollution in Lancaster County waters poses potential health threat, experts say

Tiny pieces of plastic are polluting some of Lancaster County’s most well-known waterways, where local researchers fear they could pose threats to both human health and wildlife.
In fact, the plastics — some made with harmful chemicals — have been found in more than 50 major rivers, streams and lakes across Pennsylvania.
“They are so ubiquitous, they are everywhere now,” said David Bowne, an associate professor of ecology at Elizabethtown College.
Bowne was talking about microplastics — plastic fragments smaller than 5 millimeters that are often created when larger pieces of pollution break down over time.
He shared his thoughts in the days before officials at the PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center revealed on Wednesday that microplastics were present in Lancaster County. Specifically, they have been identified in water samples taken from the Conestoga River, the Little Conestoga Creek and Eshleman and Millers runs. ....

Plastic permeates Pennsylvania’s waterways, according to a study released Wednesday by PennEnvironment’s Research & Policy Center.
The environmental organization conducted a survey to study the presence of microplastics pieces of plastic debris less than 5 millimeters long, often too tiny to be caught by water-filtration systems in the state’s rivers, creeks, and streams.
Turns out, microplastics are everywhere.
Researchers took 315 samples from 53 bodies of water throughout the commonwealth over the course of 2020, including the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers in western Pennsylvania; the Susquehanna River and Conodoguinet Creek near Harrisburg; the Spring Creek, Cedar, and Slab Cabin runs in the State College area, and the Schuylkill and lower Delaware rivers and the Wissahickon, Neshaminy, Tookany, and Tohickon creeks around the Philadelphia region. ....
