San Antonio-based buffet restaurant chains cite COVID for closings, bankruptcy filings

It appears to be the end of the line for some formerly popular restaurant chains, including Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet and Ryan’s Buffet.
The chains’ operators, based in San Antonio, closed the restaurants amid the coronavirus pandemic and filed 15 bankruptcy petitions this week.
“The pandemic really took the legs out from this company, as it has many other companies in many different sectors, but particularly in the restaurant sector,” said Jason Brookner, an attorney for the bankrupt companies, during a Thursday court hearing in Dallas. ....

A Santa Maria furniture store is rebounding from not only a devastating fire but also the pandemic.
Following a January 2019 fire that destroyed Sergio’s Furniture and Mattress at 708 S. Broadway, the store opened temporarily at the Santa Maria Town Center Mall.
Owner Sergio Diaz says paying rent at the mall when it was closed due to the pandemic was tough.
Last year we were shut down for six months and when we did open up, nobody went into the mall, so literally we were just paying the bills with my savings,” Diaz said. ....

The Famous Steakhouse, Urban Egg, Josh & John’s, Tucanos Brazilian Grill and Jake & Telly’s Greek Taverna are among 19 El Paso County restaurants to receive new grants from the Winter Outdoor Dining Fund.
“In a year of challenges, our restaurants, bars, and food trucks and workers have faced hardship and remained resilient through it all,” Gov. Jared Polis said.
“This new round of grants from the Winter Outdoor Dining Fund will allow our partners to implement creative solutions, remain in operation and continue to serve their customers while inspiring consumer confidence.”
Polis announced the grants Feb. 2, in partnership with the Colorado Restaurant Association, the Colorado Restaurant Foundation, Xcel Energy, and the Xcel Energy Foundation announced the latest round of grants for Colorado restaurants.  ....
