Canton Bluecoats to host Party of the Plaza Aug 1 to kick off tour

The Independent CANTON – The Canton Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps is ready to bring its music, marching and unique style back to the field after a year off. Before the group heads out on this summer s Magical Mystery tour, the Canton-based drum corps will host a free community event. Party in the Plaza  set for Aug. 1 at Centennial Plaza  will allow community members to experience the area s musical talent as well as serve as the premiere of the Bluecoat s 2021 show Lucy. It s been a personal project bringing the Bluecoats into the community, said Mike Scott, Bluecoats chief executive officer. We would love to get the community there and to celebrate. Party in the Plaza is an opportunity for us to thank our hometown for their support over these difficult months, and to celebrate the arts in Canton at a free event.

From 2008-2012, FAME was one of the most unique street art festivals in the world, hosting by Angelo Milano in the famed ceramic town of Grottaglie in Southern Italy. Roderic Covey, 91, of North Canton, Ohio, passed away Jan. 15, 2021, in his home after a brief illness. Born in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio to Robert and Elizabeth (Call) Covey, Rod graduated from high school at age 17, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Pharmacist’s Mate at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He graduated from The Ohio State University (OSU), earning a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations. He served as President of the OSU Wesleyan Foundation and sang in the Ohio State Glee Club and Quartet. He carried his penchant for singing into all aspects of his life and was always willing to sing to an audience.

He was 91. According to his obituary: Covey, a native of Martin s Ferry, joined the Navy at 17 and later graduated from Ohio State University in 1952 with a degree in public relations. He was recruited by the former Timken Roller Bearing Co. to work as an assistant editor of the company s employee magazine, and later joined Meldrum & Fewsmith, an advertising agency in Cleveland. In 1967, Covey launched his own advertising and marketing firm, Covey and Koons, in Canton, according to his obituary. Covey, who later moved to North Canton, was deeply involved as a volunteer in numerous community organizations and local charities, including the Boy Scouts, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival, the Canton Advertising Club, which named him Ad Man of the Year in 1968.
