Faithless Hijabi founder Zara Kay has spoken with Sky News about her arrest in Tanzania in late 2020, saying she was taken into custody “simply because I held views that they didn’t agree with”.
Faithless Hijabi is an organisation that supports women who have experienced persecution for leaving Islam, founded by Ms Kay in 2018.
She was arrested by Tanzanian authorities in December 2020 and released in January.
“They found me as a threat just being in Tanzania and visiting my family for a few months,” she told Sky News host Rita Panahi. ....

When Zara Kay began fearing for her safety in Tanzania, she asked her adopted country, Australia, for help.
The ex-Muslim activist first went to the east African country to attend to a family emergency, but soon started receiving threats of murder and rape over her public comments on social media about the government and Islam. One text message said, “If u don’t wanna be killed… Don’t post shit”. Another read: “What makes you think you deserve to stay alive?”
Australian acitivist Zara Kay, now at her friend’s home in Manly, was detained for 36 hours in Tanzania. ....
