Hamilton makes 'smart city' list

It has come in at 21st, ahead of the only other New Zealand cities ranked, with Wellington at 33rd and Christchurch at 43rd.
More than 230 municipalities submitted entries to make the list, with Hamilton applying for the first time this year.
Singapore ranked number one, followed by Seoul, London, Barcelona and Helsinki rounding out the top five.
The rankings, by the Singapore-based Eden Strategy Institute assess each city s governance on 10 key indicators for achieving smart city outcomes, such as increasing citizen participation, improving service delivery, and enhancing digital inclusion.
The report highlighted the council s nation-leading project to replace the city s streetlights with LED bulbs, which led to significant cost savings and improved environmental outcomes. ....

Hamilton motorists have been urged to take care while on the region s roads and delay travel if possible, after torrential rain caused flooding throughout the city.
Police issued a statement this afternoon stating the areas of Fairfield Bridge, Te Aroha St, Grey St and Wellington St have been hit particularly hard by the downpour. ....

Lucky escape for pair as huge tree collapses on their car during city's dramatic thunderstorm


It’s the first time anything like that had happened to them, Sarah said.

Stuff visited the scene on Victoria Street near Fairfield Bridge, four cars were still crushed under the tree including the pair s Nissan Primera.
One car had escaped most damage and managed to drive off.

A section of Victoria St was blocked off when a large tree collapsed on five cars in Hamilton, injuring one person.
Acting sergeant Ben Wilson told
Stuff it was pure luck no one died in the accident.
One driver had been transported to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition, he said. ....

CCTV footage has shown two thieves wheeling away with a solo mum s beloved motorbike.
CCTV footage has caught what appears to be two thieves wheeling away a $10,000 motorbike, stolen from a solo mother days before Christmas.
Angela Griffin had her beloved 2012 Aprilia V4 motorbike stolen from a busy Hamilton street on December 23.
It s still missing nearly a week later, leaving the Taupō woman heartbroken”.
Griffin had parked the yellow motorbike on the corner of Victoria and MacDiarmid streets, where it was stolen.
