February 9, 2021 Harvard scholar Anthony Jack will present “The Privileged Poor: How Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students” this evening at 6 p.m. The talk, hosted as a collaborative event by the MLK and Common Reading programs, is the second of three keynote events to promote discussion of ideas related to this year’s Common Reading Born a Crime. Jack’s research has earned numerous awards and has been featured in the New York Times, The Atlantic, The National Review, NPR and other media outlets. The Washington Post heralded his 2019 book The Privileged Poor as breaking “new ground on social and educational questions of great import.” ....
February 5, 2021 The MLK and Common Reading Programs invite you to attend the keynote presentation by Harvard scholar Anthony Jack who will present “The Privileged Poor: How Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9. Jack’s 2019 book on this topic was described by the Washington Post as breaking “new ground on social and educational questions of great import.” This talk is the second of three keynote events that are collaborative efforts by the MLK and Common Reading programs to highlight issues raised by Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime. January 14, 2021 By Steve Nakata, Division of Student Affairs Campuses across the Washington State University system have planned more than 30 events in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. The events will span several months and feature authors, songwriters, rappers, visual artists and films. The full list of events can be viewed at the MLK Program website. The celebration kicks-off with Virtual Bingo for Student Groups on Wednesday, Jan. 20 and concludes with Tongan Visual Artist Robin Fifita on Friday, April 30. Scheduled in between are a wide variety of events including several keynote addresses, beginning with Bree Newsome Bass on Thursday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. ....
