Factory Fire Reveals Bangladesh’s Child Labor Problem

On the afternoon of Thursday, July 8, a fire broke out on the ground floor of the Hashem Food & Beverages factory at Rupganj, an industrial district lying at the outskirts of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. Experts have pointed to the illegal storage of chemicals and plastics on the ground floor of the building as the reason behind the fire’s rapid spread. In the aftermath of the inferno, which engulfed the six-story building, more than 50 people are known to have been killed, and many others left injured or unaccounted for. ....

Labour Ministry forms panels to review standards under OSH&WC Code

Synopsis
The committee on factories and dock works will be chaired by R K Elangovan, DG, DGFASLI (Directorate General, Factory Advice and Labour Institutes), Mumbai.
The labour ministry has set up three expert committees to review the existing rules and regulations pertaining to safety, fire and other working conditions and to suggest safety related standards for factories under the the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH&WC) Code, 2020.
The OSH&WC Code has been enacted after amalgamating thirteen different labour legislations and to simplify the laws regulating the occupational safety, health and working conditions in establishments. ....
