Amount of cyber spying is staggering. brian todd is here to break it down for us. reporter: it is staggering the amount of weapons systems compromised by the chinese. the u.s. had a technological advantage in military capability, but the chinese are catching up. a new report bolsters accusations they hacked their way closer to the top. they re america s most advanced combat weapons and defense systems. f-18 fighter jet, the combat ship, the balanlistic defense missile system. blueprints for these and other weapons have been breached by hackers, a controversial version of the report from defense science board, made up of government and civilian experts was given to the washington post. the report doesn t accuse china of stealing entire designs, but if they didn t steal them, how did they compromise them? we spoke with a top cyber security expert who did a separate report this year on chinese military hackers. ....
Threat to america s military security, chinese cyber spies reportedly are hacking into blueprints for sensitive pentagon weapon systems in a much bigger way and more dangerous way than we ever realized. some defense experts now say the amount of cyber spying that s been revealed is staggering. cnn s brian todd is breaking it down for us. it is enormous what s going on. it is enormous. the u.s. traditionally had a technological advantage in military capability, but they re catching up. there are allegations they hacked their way closer to the top. they re the advanced combat system, f-18 fighter jet, a combat ship, a missile defense system. according to a new report, the designs for these and other high tech weapons have been breached by chinese hackers. a confidential version of the report from the defense science ....
this is really a red letter day. reporter: experts say that is no exaggeration. peter finger wrote a book on america s drones. it was one of these things they said would never happen, and they were able to do it. reporter: it looks like the stealth b-2 bomber, but this is just a prototype. the navy wants to build planes like this that will carry weapons and land back on the deck of an aircraft carrier all controlled by koom puters. it means the navy can attack the most dangerous targets without putting pilots at risk. the u.s. can send them almost anywhere in the world without having to rely on other countries for bases. finger says the advances in technology means it s almost like having an actual pilot in the cockpit landing a jet. the f-18, for example, has a system where there s a pilot inside it, but computers are taking over many of the primary tasks when it s doing something ....
That is really a question for secretary panetta and the military. finally there is an intelligence question as well. i don t think hillary clinton will be able to talk about that element as well. gregg: well, an f-18 can get there in less than an hour from the closest base that was in italy. so somebody had to make that decision. do you suspect hillary clinton is going to say look, that wasn t my pay grade, that wasn t me? well, part of this is difficult because it really, looks more and more like the main activities in benghazi were cia related and hillary clinton is not going to want to talk in open testimony about that. however, it has been reported and i have confirmed this, that state department beliefs the cia was responsible for security of that diplomatic mission. gregg: right. i think the cia did not request military backup that evening. they believed they had a team in tripoli that was able to respond to it and they believed their team, sort of about a mile away at a cia ....
