The Labour Party will vote against a bill to give police more powers over protests this week in the wake of the Metropolitan Police’s crackdown on a vigil for the murder victim Sarah Everard.
David Lammy, the shadow home secretary, said Ms Everard’s death had “instigated a national demand for action to tackle violence against women” and prompted the party to vote against the Government’s plans. ....

Anti-HS2 protester ‘locks himself to concrete block’ amid attempted eviction
An anti-HS2 protester has locked himself to a concrete block at the bottom of a tunnel in a bid to avoid eviction, according to his supporters.
Bailiffs working on behalf of HS2 have been trying to evict the group from Euston Square Gardens in front of Euston Station – the site of one of the megaproject’s major builds – since early last week.
Last night, they moved in to remove the nine-strong group, with
Sky News reporting a claim that bailiffs had dug a parallel tunnel alongside that of the protesters in a bid to get them out. ....
