A damning report from the Independent Expert Scientific Committee (IESC) on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development has found the mine poses significant risk to surrounding reef ecosystems with no way to offset the damage from mine-polluted water. The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) said the new open cut coal mine, situated just 10 km from the World Heritage Reef, would be disastrous because mine affected water could flow into Queensland’s largest fish habitat at Broad Sound, north of Rockhampton. ....
The mayor and two councillors at Rockhampton Regional Council have formally rejected providing support for Clive Palmer’s proposed coal project - a day before its final environmental approval deadline. The Central Queensland Coal Project is a proposed metallurgical coal development located on the Bruce Hwy, near St Lawrence, between Rockhampton and Mackay. The company plans to commence construction in July 2022 and would employ up to 250 people. It is currently awaiting State Government and Commonwealth approval before construction and operations can begin. An independent scientific group has raised environmental concerns over Clive Palmer s proposed Central Queensland Coal project near St Lawrence. The project, proposed for Styx Basin, consists of an open cut operation and rail connection to the Queensland Rail North Coast Line. The project intends to mine two million tonnes per annum of run-of-mine coal, which when processed will produce 1.5 million tonnes per annum of semi soft coking coal. There are plans for the proposed mine to eventually ramp up production to 10 million tonnes a year. Central Queensland Coal was first proposed four years ago, but the company s latest Environmental Impact Assessment amendment has drawn concern from the independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development. ....
