For republicans, keeping the senate 50/50 means would almost be knocking on the door of the majority in two years, given their friendly map of presidential elections go anywhere anything like we have seen in the last few cycles. and finally, the third reason it s important is one name. senator joe manchin, he has been a perennial headache for democrats. from west virginia has been the decisive vote on the house of nominations on reconciliation, legislation, if democrats have a 51st seat there will be less reliant on him to get that decisive vote on particularly nominations, judicial nominees, executive branch nominees that president biden will be trying to get to the senate. it, matters it matters a lot alicia. fauna and sahil, thank you as always for setting the stakes of this race that we ll be seeing you both a lot in the next few days. with the race this close, tuesday center run off will all come down to voter turnout and who stays at home. joining me now amazon political contri ....
They created a special process to, in fact, lift the debt ceiling this week. and they suspended the filibuster to do it. they what? yes. here s the part where i want you to pay attention to the wisdom of senator ted cruz of texas. he tells nbc news this week that suspending the filibuster in this manner creates a, quote, disturbing precedent, as it, quote, opens the door for democrats to try to do that in the future on progressive priorities. ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. correct, sir. there are all sorts of exceptions to the filibuster rule. it s already carved out and can t be used for budget bills, for judicial nominees, for executive branch nominees, for the war powers resolution, for the congressional review act, for certain parts of trade agreements. now newly as of this week you also can t use the filibuster to block raising the debt ceiling. why, again, are we not bypassing the filibuster for voting rights? two bills that would guarantee ....
For judicial nominees, for executive branch nominees, for the war powers resolution, for the congressional review act, for certain parts of trade agreements. now newly as of this week you also can t use the filibuster to block raising the debt ceiling. why, again, are we not bypassing the filibuster for voting rights? two bills that would guarantee protections for voting rights are stalled in the senate right now for want of 60 votes because the republicans are filibustering it. why don t the democrats bypass the filibuster for those, too? this is not a rhetorical question. it is a very real tactical question. you just did it on the debt ceiling. why wouldn t you do it to protect democracy? watch this space. feel stuck and need a loan? move to sofi and feel what it s like to get your money right. ....
Caucus in the senate and the house and in getting this bill to his desk. i have a more optimistic view of this than jake does, i must tell you. i get it. i understand why some believe that the calcification of these views by senator manchin are unlikely to change. i don t doubt the sincerity of his views but there used to be a filibuster for judicial nominees. there was once a filibuster for executive branch nominees. the reconciliation budget process is, in effect, an exception to the filibuster. so, this notion that somehow this cannot be done, that a constitutional carveout is not possible, i just don t buy that. i think that at the end of the day, senator manchin has put a lot of time and effort into crafting the compromise measure that he has put forward and we re going to have a good opportunity on wednesday to see an up or down or hopefully get to an up or down vote on that particular bill and assuming that vote does not go the way that we would like, hopefully ....
Been passed, and in the senate the confirmation of a lot of executive branch nominees, and judges. all these are very important accomplishments. the two big things that haven t been done are a reform of the healthcare of obamacare and of course that failed in the senate by one vote with all democrats opposing. so you can t blame that on the republicans. and then immigration reform, which i think has been used as a political football by those on the other side of the aisle. shannon: well, we will be watching. we ll see as you stay, as a lot of people in arizona hope that you will. in the meantime, senator kyl, thank you very much for your time. as some voters express concerns over the security of voting machines ahead of tuesday. we go inside the government s new efforts to combat any ....
