Our Pandemic Year: Retirement in the time of COVID-19 Evelynn Ellis sits outside her Hartford, Vt., home in a spot she calls “the camp” near a small brook Friday, Feb. 19, 2021. Ellis observes the birds and wildlife year round while meditating and praying and recently caught sight of a mink there. “I’m a meditator. I call it prayer meditation because I don’t have time to separate them. Who has that time? And I doubt if God or the Buddha mind,” she said. Though she keeps in contact with her family with daily texts and frequent video calls, Ellis still feels isolated. “When your core family is removed … and it’s not even safe to go see communities that may look like them, down in Boston, you realize all of a sudden how white the Valley is.
