Donald Alexander Pontti, aged 90, passed away in his sleep peacefully at home in Kodiak on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Born in Ishpeming, Michigan, to Jarl Alexander and Martha Holma Pontti, Don attended Jackson High School and Jackson Junior College before enlisting in the U.S. Army, serving as a master sergeant (E-7) in the Korean War as a tank commander.
Upon discharge from the Army, Don continued taking college classes, working nights and weekends, playing independent football with the Jackson Lions, learning to fly, and purchasing his own Piper Cub. He attended Northern Michigan University, lettered in football and graduated with a B.S. in education, with a major in geography and minors in biology, English and history. ....

Stitching together strength: Crocheting helps Alton woman regain normalcy

Alton Memorial Rehabilitation and Therapy’s Tonya Grant, left, program director of the therapy department, learns a stitch from resident Evelyn Elmore, whose love of crocheting reignited and restored her happiness when Grant began crocheting with her. Elmore has helped Grant improve her crocheting skills, too, and make crocheting something now Grant loves to do.
ALTON After 76 years of crocheting, making everything from bedspreads to blankets to infant hats, Evelyn Elmore didn’t have the desire to crochet anymore.
For the past six months or so, Elmore, 86, has been at Alton Memorial Rehabilitation and Therapy (formerly Eunice Smith Home), where she was admitted for a non-COVID-related illness. When she arrived, she was so weak she couldn’t walk, and it was going to take a long time and a lot of therapy for her to regain her strength. ....
