In June 2019, Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer in the Netherlands announced that no new data centers would be approved until 2020. Existing data center projects could continue construction, but all new permits were paused for one year.

AMSTERDAM and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Equinix, the world s digital infrastructure company, today announced it will join European cloud infrastructure and data center providers and European trade associations, to form the Climate Neutral Data Centre Operator Pact and Self-Regulatory Initiative.
The Pact marks the first time the industry has come together to solidify its commitment to ensure that European data centers are carbon neutral by 2030. Twenty-five European cloud and colocation providers have formed a pact centred on accelerating the datacentre industry’s progress in becoming a climate neutral market by 2030.
The providers have joined forces with 17 trade associations – including TechUK – to form the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, as a show of its commitment to supporting the wider effort to cut carbon emissions across Europe. ....
