Turkey's crackdown on dissidents leads to spike in Turkish asylum seekers

According to recent data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), the number of Turkish citizens seeking asylum increased by 506 percent between 2015 and 2021, Euronews Turkish reported on Thursday.
The number of Turkish citizens seeking asylum in European Union member states rose to 18,145 in 2020, from 2015’s 2,995.
Following the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, supporters of Muslim preacher Fethullah Gülen, who Turkey holds responsible for the putsch, have sought refuge in the EU, especially in Germany. Other groups targeted by the Turkish government, such as Kurds, have also left Turkey in increasing numbers following the resurgence of clashes in the country’s southeast when a peace process with armed Kurdish groups failed in 2015. ....
