San Diego Unified School District officials announced Thursday that the district will pilot a “Boost Democracy” texting initiative for public participation during school board meetings.
The program, which starts Tuesday, will allow community members who plan to remotely participate in school board meetings to sign up to receive texts alerting them when it’s time for their public comments.
It is one of the first such initiatives in the nation, said Shane Harris, the president of the People’s Association of Justice Advocates who pitched the idea. He also is urging the San Diego City Council, the County Board of Supervisors, and the County Board of Education to adopt this text message feature. ....
