Pavement collapsed. Police tell me that the driver and the passengers inside got a big shock. It was a very close call because they were trapped for a while inside. Police say the black chevy suv with family of five and their driver inside had stopped for a red light on Mission Street when the pavement collapsed. The driver said the ground just gave way and the car just dropped. Reporter it happened about 5 30 during rush hour and police immediately stopped traffic on Mission Street. The suv was perched so precariously that fire crews had to tie it down before they could get the people out. They were worried about the occupants we didnt want the car to fall in any further. They secured the vehicle they tied off to a couple of parking meters with some rope. Reporter a spokesman said the hole was 9 feet deep and 12 feet long and was caused by a broken sewer main. 3foot by 5 feet high sewer main dates back to 1875 usually with sewers that old age is the likely cause of the break.
