Because it s the first time that we re going to see a congress committee refer a former president on criminal referral charges. you re right, though, that these don t carry any legal weight. but what we also learn is that in regards to the republican congressman who defied the subpoenas issued to them by this january 6th committee, they re going to be referring four of them to the house ethics committee. there were five republican lawmakers who were given subpoenas. so one appears to be left off these referrals. but this is really a moment where the days left in the year become a challenge for this committee that has been up against the clock since its inception last year because the ethics committee is split between democrats and republicans and there s only a few days left in congress, it s unlikely that the ethics referrals will go anywhere. at least now we have a good sense of what we re going to see from this committee in charges of tangible referrals, not just on the criminal fro ....

Here is what happens now, as these ethics referrals get over. what happens to these free range insurrectionists that you have to work with every day? is there no accountability for them? do they get off scot-free? the ethics committee is one of the most bipartisan committees in congress. i would let them do their job and see what happens. what i m concerned about is when kevin mccarthy and incoming chair of the judiciary committee jim jordan blow off bipartisan congressional subpoenas that makes it difficult for them to subpoena next term. witnesses will blow off the subpoenas as well. citing mccarthy and jim jordan s actions. that s damaging to the credibility of the house of representatives. am i overstating it, you re about to have a house controlled by republicans, if kevin mccarthy is the speaker and the leadership ranks are made up of ....

Divided among democrats and republicans. they may not have the time or votes to do that. so it may go nowhere. but this committee s larger ethos has been putting things in the public s record so even those these referrals don t have legal weight behind them, doj is going to make its own decision, and whether or not something happens with the ethics referrals, the whole point has been to put this in the public s record and give some accountability for what happened on january 6th. can you talk through some of the other names we should be listening for? we know there have been discussions more broadly and we ve seen it when we ve been together, people like jeffrey clark. mark meadows, who the committee wanted information from and weren t getting it. certainly those are the names i m going to be listening for because they re names we ve heard over the course of these hearings. when you think about the fact we know that eastman and trump are likely to receive their referrals today, the ....

Certainly, we expect to see them talk through new details today as they come to the close of this roughly 18-month investigation. now, you mentioned what former president donald trump s response was to these referrals. his spokesperson and himself really ignoring the substance of our reporting and instead trying to focus this in partisan fashion and on dr. eastman, his team declined to tonight when we came to them yesterday. but there s another interesting piece. what they re going to be doing in terms of ethics referrals for the four of five members of congress who received subpoenas but ignored them and declined to comply. we re going to see these referred to the house ethics committee. the clock may win out on this one because when they re referring to the ethics committee, that runs out at the end of this congress. it s a congress that s evenly ....

Cnn by jake tapper. here is what he was saying. we will also be considering what s the appropriate remedy for members of congress who ignore a congressional subpoena, as well as the evidence that was so pertinent to our investigation and why we wanted to bring them in. is it a criminal referral to another branch of government or is it better that the congress police its own? censure? well, censure was something that we have considered, ethics referrals is something we have considered. so criminal referrals we are talking a lot about that related to possibly donald trump and maybe some others, but one of the things there s other options that the committee also may have whenever they make referrals, one of them would be an ethics referral to the house ethics committee. we will have to see if they do that with these five people, but when you step back all of this comes down to how does congress police its own as schiff said, ....
