After a year on the sidelines where he filled the role of Mercedes’ reserve driver, Ocon returned to the grid for the 2020 championship. Signing with Renault, the Frenchman’s season got off to a slow start but picked up in the latter half. He scored his maiden Formula 1 podium with a runner-up result at the Sakhir Grand Prix, 12th overall in the championship with his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo P5.

Ocon struggled adjusting to ‘different’ Renault PlanetF1 21/01/2021 © Getty Images Esteban Ocon Renault Esteban Ocon has revealed he struggled to get to grips with the Renault in 2020 because it was markedly different to the F1 cars he had been used to driving. The Frenchman returned after a year away from the grid by partnering Daniel Ricciardo at Renault, but took most of the season to finally hit his straps and become a force. The undoubted highlight was at the penultimate race of the season, the Sakhir Grand Prix, in which Ocon certainly had some luck on his side but was still delighted to claim an emotional first F1 podium finish in second place behind Sergio Perez.

Despite being anything but a conventional season, there was still a sense of normality about the action on-track – and therefore we were able to draw plenty of conclusions about what unfolded across that rapid-fire stretch of weekends.

Renault expected more from junior drivers

Renault expected more from junior drivers PlanetF1 20/12/2020 © Getty Images Esteban Ocon Renault pit wall Renault admit that they were expecting their junior drivers, especially in Formula 2, to perform better than they did in 2020. The French manufacturer had been clear that they were hoping to promote a junior driver into a 2021 Formula 1 seat, but that didn’t happen with Renault instead turning to a famous name of their past in Fernando Alonso. And it’s hard to blame Renault for making that decision. Christian Lundgaard and Guanyu Zhou were the Renault juniors to take part in the 2020 Formula 2 season, both landing competitive seats at DAMS and UNI-Virtuosi respectively.

Ricciardo gamble steals ex s thunder

by Andrew McMurtry 14th Dec 2020 5:29 AM The F1 season is in the books with Max Verstappen winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, leading from start to finish in a largely uneventful race. On the Yas Marina circuit, there was a surprising amount of overtaking but the front of the grid stayed the same with Verstappen leading Mercedes pair Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton in second and third for the final race this season.
