Tonight at University Settlement’s Houston Street Center, developers of Essex Crossing are unveiling their designs for the first four buildings of the large residential and commercial project coming to the former Seward Park urban renewal site.
Thanks to a press briefing held earlier today, we’re able to bring you a condensed version of what members of the public are seeing this evening. Delancey Street Associates, the consortium building the nearly 2-million sq. ft. project, asked us to wait until the meeting of Community Board 3’s land use committee got underway before we published the renderings you see here. ....

Essex Crossing Developers Begin Demolition of Broome Street Fire House | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

Demolition began this week on the old Broome Street fire house, the latest sign that the Essex Crossing development project is picking up momentum. As you can see from these photos show through the construction fencing, it did not take crews long to demolish portions of the southern wall. The 1937 structure is part of Essex Crossing site 5, which will be the new home of a 15-story residential and commercial building.
Last week, in a  briefing before Community Board 3’s land use committee, members of the development team said demolition will take about two weeks. Crews will be working 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. ....

City Declines to Renew Permit For Longtime Essex Street Market Vendor | The Lo-Down : News from the Lower East Side

Lately, we’ve been talking about new arrivals at the Essex Street Market (bagels, ice cream and soup have been added to the retail mix).  But pending legal proceedings there’s also a noteworthy departure to report; a merchant who’s been part of the market for 23 years.
Carmen Salvador at the Essex Street Market.
For the past couple of decades, Carmen Salvador has run Three Brothers Clothing from a small stall on the north end of the market.  But her landlord, the city’s Economic Development Corp. (EDC) booted the longtime business at the end of September.  Salvador turned to a local non-profit group, Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) and to MFY Legal Services, which have been helping her fight the move in court; the two sides are scheduled to appear before a judge Thursday. ....

A year ago next week, a sweeping plan was unveiled to redevelop the former Seward Park urban renewal site adjacent to the Williamsburg Bridge, bringing one-thousand new apartments and 600,000 square feet of commercial space to the Lower East Side. Since that time, developers and architects have been hard at work to meet a spring 2015 deadline for groundbreaking on the first four parcels.  For an update on their progress, we sat down recently with key members of Delancey Street Associates, the consortium created to build the project, known as Essex Crossing.
Charlie Bendit is co-CEO of Taconic Investment Partners, which along with L+M Partners and BFC Partners, was selected to create the nearly 2-million square foot complex. Isaac Henderson of L+M is the project manager.  We met in a conference room ringed with conceptual drawings of Essex Crossing at L+M’s offices on Park Avenue South.
