Five cases of the new, highly contagious COVID-19 strain were confirmed in the Twin Cities metro area Monday, and chances are, it’s already in the Northland, too.
Nicholas Van Deelen, St. Luke’s chief medical officer and interim co-CEO, said Thursday during a Duluth-based news conference that he believes the new strain is circulating. It will take several weeks to confirm that it is the new strain, he said.
“We’ve seen some activity over the past two weeks that suggests to us that there is a change in the virus and that we probably do have that more highly transmissible virus here,” Van Deelen said. ....

St. Louis County s public health division and area pharmacies will start receiving vaccines this week to aid the health care system in getting the shots to priority populations.
While the three health care system hubs in Northeastern Minnesota St. Luke s hospital and Essentia Health, both in Duluth, as well as Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing all received their first shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and are anticipating a second soon, public health and pharmacies will only receive the Moderna vaccine since it doesn t require ultra-cold storage. ....
