Essay: Loving April


Today we have blue skies and icy winds, as if to demonstrate this principle.
“Warming up?” my husband asks. He has noticed how fast I’m paddling. “Almost,” I answer. One side of the river is in shadow, a black and white picture of bare trees and patches of lingering snow. On the other side, the sun shines and the colors gleam the rich brown of last year’s cattails, the soft green of this year’s willows. We’re traveling between the dark and the light, I think, between winter and spring. “How about some coffee?” Dick asks, already steering the canoe toward shore. We sit on a big log in bright sun, passing the thermos cup between us. The peanut butter cookies are greasy and delicious. We come here every April, a tradition that I’m especially grateful for this year. Essay: Long & Short of Pencils

They remind me of people I know. People who, like long pencils with worn-out erasers, don’t say much and, even so, are constantly correcting themselves. Second-guessing and apologizing.
I want to reassure them that their contributions are valuable, that no disclaimers are necessary.
Maybe they grew up with a critical parent or teacher who made them reluctant to speak their minds. I had a father like that.
Maybe that’s why I’m fascinated by the short pencils with un-used erasers people who never hesitate to speak up, no matter what the topic. Who never seem to doubt the rightness of their opinions, even when a review might have been beneficial. ....

Essay: By Chance


Oh, right. Of course. “Thanks for pointing that out,” I said, feeling a little foolish.
But it made me think about how we meet people and it’s true. Mostly it’s by chance, except for blind dates and I have to say that none of my blind dates turned into romances.
So, what’s the lesson here? To stop planning and trust everything to chance? Probably not, but maybe to plan a little less and trust a little more.
I recalled a passage from a favorite book, “The Snow Leopard” by Peter Matthiessen.
The author is embarking on a dangerous journey into the Himalayas and before departing, he visits his spiritual teacher, a Buddhist monk. “[He] rose from his black cushion,” Matthiessen writes, “and, taking me by the shoulders, touched my forehead three times with his own … and sent me on my way with a great shout. ‘Expect nothing!’” ....
