Gabrielle Cavassa finds her jazz calling in New Orleans The sound of Gabrielle Cavassa’s voice has broken through the jazz scene of New Orleans. Four years after her arrival in the city, she has formed a following of fans who eagerly anticipate her performances. She tried her best to grow up on jazz, but claims she didn’t know what the word meant at all while growing up in Southern California. “San Diego is certainly not a jazz capital I didn’t know what it was, no one knew what it was,” she said. On a trip to New York City at age thirteen, Cavassa’s grandfather brought her to the iconic Blue Note nightclub. He declared to the employees, much to Cavassa’s embarrassment, that his granddaughter would play there one day. ....
Brad Walker and Extended announce the release of their debut concert film, recorded at Esplanade Studios in January 2021. The film is the culmination of an ongoing collaboration between two of the most compelling forces on the New Orleans creative music scene: Walker, with a decade of award-nominated and nationally reviewed records, and Extended, which features three of the leading lights of the jazz scene in New Orleans: Oscar Rossignoli (piano), Matt Booth (bass), and Brad Webb (drums). Its namesake, Danny O’Flaherty, will offer a nostalgic return to the days when he presided over the stage as he celebrates his 70th birthday and 50 years as a professional musician with a Facebook Live concert on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. Central. A native son of Connemara, County Galway, O’Flaherty is a singer and songwriter who immigrated to the U.S. in 1970. He has spent spent much of his life preserving and promoting Celtic culture. ....
