people, what about mental ill illness? even the registration governor desantis signed a few months ago, people are concerned about anybody with mental issues. this person seems to have a little bit of history that was seeable. what can we do about it locally or statewide? we have to do a better job of background checks. they do exactly what they re supposed to do? there s nothing there to indicate he shouldn t own a firearm. there s something else that needs to be done. really what needs to be done is people need to tell us when they see or hear these things coming and rising up in an individual. i don t know if anybody knew how he really felt. we re still looking. that s my answer to that. mental illness is there. not everyone is mentally ill, grabs a firearm and kills people for no reason. 11-minute response. what are the lessons early on
your thoughts on how we prepare for that normalization in the coming days and weeks. well, this is an extraordinary moment we re in today, nicole, with news of the indictment. and i think it all does tie back to what juliette said in that article is what trump brought into our politics and the danger and the vitriol. but what s even more astounding than that, nicolle, is how for seeable all of it was. i think when we look back in history far from this moment, when we clear those cobwebs of cacophony, as they say, we will conclude this was very foreseeable before and then during and after the trump administration. before the trump administration, you had people like ted cruz and lindsey graham and jim jordan and mick mulvaney and rick perry saying that donald trump was a cancer on conservatism, that he was unfit for office, and that he was actually dangerous. now a lot of these people ended

underlying problem which is absolutely the easy access to assault weapons. how much subjectivity is there in the process of these background checks? you have state laws that are interwoven with federal databases, but how much subjectivity among some individuals along the way does factor in? well, it absolutely varies. i mean, on the one end you have if somebody is arrested and convicted of a crime that s going to leave a record in a database that is going to be hopefully, if the system is working, seeable, reviewable and something that would cause a flag for a firearms purchase. on the other end of the spectrum you re absolutely relying on the subjective judgment of a whole number of people. folks who are observing the behavior of the person who is at risk or reporting it, whether they think that is sufficient to call the authorities and make a note of it. if their family, perhaps they don t want to do that because they re ashamed of it, because they re minimizing the issue or any
in this room. i think what we ll watch carefully now going forward is to see if president putin has any actions that match this increased readiness level of his nuclear forces. there are four levels of nuclear readiness in the russian system. they just move from the normal status quo level one level up. we would now expect to watch for movement of warheads, does he put nuclear armed submarines to sea, does he disperse nuclear bombers, does he change protocols in the command and control network. these are things that are knowable, seeable, and we ll watch it carefully. do you think he is a rational actor right now? or do we assume he might not be? well, i think there are disturbing signs, but one thing that is clear without debate is that he s an isolated actor. he has placed himself at the very pinnacle of this autocratic
