Natividad Seefeld could not believe it when she answered the phone and the caller told her he wanted to start a library at the Park Plaza Cooperative, a small manufactured home park just off Hwy. 65 in Fridley.
I thought it was a fake phone call, she said. Anybody calling from Washington and I wonder what did I do wrong.
The call came from Libraries Without Borders, a nonprofit with the mission of bringing knowledge and information to people in need. And with it came the offer to turn the diverse community s storm shelter into a learning hub by supplying Wi-Fi connections, books, art materials, computers and iPads. ....

Metro briefs: Ramsey County to remove 400 ash trees

400 ash trees slated for removal
Crews are removing 400 ash trees at Ramsey County Parks and Recreation sites, including parks and golf courses, with the goal of preventing the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer.
The county is partnering with the nonprofit Tree Trust to plant 400 new trees of varying species, at no cost to the county. Trees will be removed at Battle Creek Regional Park, Beaver Lake County Park and Turtle Lake County Park.
The restoration project is part of the county s ash tree management plan, which includes a systemwide inventory and proposes to proactively remove or replace priority ash trees. ....
