HiSilicon, Huawei Technologies Co’s integrated circuit (IC) design unit, is expected to be the biggest loser in the 5G smartphone chipset market in 2021 as US company Qualcomm and Taiwan’s MediaTek expand their presence, according to a new research note published by Counterpoint.
The Chinese chip firm had 23 per cent of the 5G phone chipset market in 2020, but it is expected to see that share shrink to less than 5 per cent this year. Its share of overall global smartphone chipsets, which includes 4G, is expected to shrink from 10 per cent in 2020 to about 3 per cent this year, dropping out from the top five players, according to Counterpoint.
Chinese technology company Huawei reported a plunge in revenue but a jump in profits in the first quarter, as the company braces for a faltering smartphone segment under the US blockade and robust growth in businesses that target enterprise clients.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co is taking time to set strategy for its cloud business as the Shenzhen-based company pushes ahead with a broader effort to turn itself from a hardware maker into a services provider in the face of harsh US sanctions.
Huawei formally disbanded its cloud and AI business group earlier this month ― just one year after its creation ― and separated cloud from the server and hardware storage operation. It eventually appointed rotating chairman Eric Xu Zhijun?as chairman of the cloud unit and Richard Yu Chengdong, former chief executive officer of Huawei s consumer business and another close confidante of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, as the cloud unit s CEO.

Chinese technology giant Huawei charted a clear path for its development during an industry conference it held on Monday, saying that it will emphasize certain business segments such as software development, the auto sector, and 5G as it continues to seek survival amid uncertainties.
This year will be another one full of challenges, but it will also be the beginning of a gradual clarification of future development strategies, Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu Zhijun said in a keynote speech titled Moving Forward Through Times of Uncertainty at the annual Global Analyst Summit held in Shenzhen, the firm s headquarters in South China s Guangdong Province.
