announcer: from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with kate snow. good evening. much of the middle section of this country has been struggling with ice and freezing rain all weekend long. that storm now blamed for six deaths across three states. it s far from over. 13 states are under winter weather alerts tonight as the system shifts north. we begin with blake mccoy in kansas city. reporter: up to an inch of ice blanketing parts of oklahoma, trees cracking under the weight, power out for thousands as this three-day ice storm deposits a trail of frozen danger across several states. in nebraska today, a fiery scene when two semitrucks crashed on i-80 near kearney. one jack knifed, the other erupted in flames. those in kansas showing an outof control ice. now state troopers are asking people to stay home as hundreds more remain without power. reporter: two kansas state troopers were hit while in their car on the side of a highway th
this morning. authorities say 30 people are dead after the boeing 747 crashed into 20 houses by the airport. ali joins us live in london with the very latest. ali? good morning. that s right. the turkish cargo jet crashed shy of the airport, killing at least 30 people. most of them were residents in their cottages in this little village that was struck by the boeing 747 as it tried to land in dense fog. now the cottages which the boeing struck are right by the runway, in very close proximity. the runway and the village are essentially separated by a metal fence and that s why the damage was so bad. you can see the devastating pictures show the plane plowed through a few hundred yards through the village crushing houses and finally ending up on top of one of the houses. you can see the remnants of the broken aircraft smashed on top of one of the houses. the crash happened at about 7:30 local time, so most people would have been in their cottages and that s why the death toll
