HUNTINGTON â The city of Huntington is moving full steam ahead with its continued effort to remove and demolish unsafe buildings within the city. During a Huntington City Council meeting Monday night, council members unanimously approved a resolution to fund the demolition of more than 100 structures. The contract for this project was awarded to Danny Sullivan Excavating, of Coal Grove, Ohio, with an expected cost not to exceed $1.5 million. Funds for these demolitions will come from the cityâs general fund, Community Development Block Grant funds and private donations. In October, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams announced the cityâs goal to demolish all 119 buildings currently on the cityâs unsafe building list by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. The demolition is part of Project B.A.N.E., which stands for Blight and Nuisance Elimination. ....

The contract would be entered with Danny Sullivan Excavating, of Coal Grove, Ohio, which received the highest score by a panel reviewing the bids. Huntington Mayor Steve Williams said Thursday that the funds should cover the demolition of upward of 90 houses, with a cost of at least $10,000 to tear down each home. Williams announced in October 2020 the cityâs goal to demolish 119 buildings on the unsafe building list by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. BARBOURSVILLE â Construction continues on the new branch library in Barboursville. âConstruction began in the fall of 2020 and we expect it to be completed sometime this year,â said Judy Rule, director of the Cabell County Public Library. Rule said the projectâs total cost is approximately $6.5 million. E.P. Leach & Sons Inc., of Huntington, was chosen to build the new library branch. âThe construction contract alone is approximately $5.7 million,â she said. After over 50 years of water-damage issues in the current building, the library is building a new 14,000- square-foot library space from the ground up, according to Rule. Barboursvilleâs current library, located at 728 Main St., is the most visited branch in the county, but it doesnât accommodate everyone who wants to use it, Rule said. ....
