The worldwide recalls. toyota throughout the year has had to deal with some safety issues. tomorrow, nitsa, the u.s. safety branching are will release a 10-month investigation. the results of their investigation that will look at the sticky gas pedals. it is an investigation that will look specifically at whether or not electronics played any part in those sticky gas pedals that led to some deaths specifically in the united states. and in north america. that s the largest consumer market for toyota. toyota is saying they won t speculate on the results of the investigation because they simply don t know them yet but they are looking for them and this is definitely a company still trying to recover from the recall fallout. here s what they said. translator: as soon as we get the results of investigation we ll scrutinize the content. translator: gradually we hope we re winning back our customer s confidence in us and our cars but the journey is not ....

Recall or shims put in under the second recall for sticking accelerator pedals, it raises the prospect that perhaps the problem behind unintended acceleration is a software or electronics problem. the national highway traffic safety administration is now looking at the so-called black boxes, which is the electronic data recorders, the control module recorders in these cars. the nitsa has received a reader that allows them to look at these black boxes, decipher what s coming out of them from toyota. the problem with that, however, tamron, is that those readers may not actually tell us if there s an electronic surge. may not tell us if there s a software glitch. so we re in sort of a gray area here where people are saying they re having these problems even after the car has been fixed. but it s going to be hard to prove what exactly caused the unintended acceleration. that s incredible. all right, phil, thank you very much. we ll talk much more about that. greatly appreciate your repor ....

Hard look as nitsa at toyota and electronics. if there is an underlying root problem and that s where it is, it will cause everybody to be more careful in designs they do for the backup systems. juliet: toyota, they re insisting that the problems they ve been having with unintended acceleration for example doesn t have to do with the electronelectronics. that s what they say. you have folks from the other side, lawmakers and others saying not so fast on that. what is your feeling? well, we don t know yet. that is why it s important that more tests be done, that nitsa continue its tests and toyota do its own as well. the systems are so sophisticated if there was a problem it might occur so seldom that they haven t found it yet. we still don t know, but all the evidence so far is that their electronics do seem to be safe. juliet: but they will keep moving forward, this, because as many of us say the bottom line is money, making money. and safety for the customers so they have to ....

but you know, yeah, i think our relationships are strong, particularly with the new president coming in. i d just like to say that the problems we ve faced in haiti have been handled very well by our 0 government and i think that equally we ll do a good job in dealing with our problems, or their problems down there in chile. brian: all right. i want to, while i have you here, the original reason we were going to have you on before the quake. right. brian: was to talk about the toyota hearings which you attended this week. there was a lot of testimony and you asked some very strong questions about why the administrator of nitsa, the national highway traffic safety administration was not testifying. did you ever get any straight answers on that. it was on list of witnesses and everybody expected he was going to testify and at the last minute his name was taken down when we were told that he was never really supposed to testify. right. brian: what s the truth there? well, th ....

Have consumed an enormous amount of time and resources, in effect, extending the period in which owners of affected vehicles are at risk. by engaging toyota directly and persuading the company to take action, the agency avoided a lengthy investigation that would have delayed fixes for a year or more. last week i announced that we are investigating whether toyota acted quickly enough in reporting these safety defects as well as whether they took all appropriate action to protect consumers. we have asked toyota to turn over a wide range of the documents that will show us when and how they learned about these safety problems. nitsa will continue to make sure toyota is doing all it promised to make its vehicles safe, and we will continue to investigate all possible causes of unintended acceleration. while the recalls are important steps in that direction, we don t maintain that they answer every question. some people believe that electric electromagnetic ....
