William & Mary has had to suspend operations of the school a few times, during the Civil War and again in 1881 when its financial resources were depleted. In 1888, the school was able to reopen with faculty who became known as the "Seven Wise Men."
He skewered, without hesitation, not only Democrats but also Republicans, and himself. Among his works: "Parliament of Whores" and a collection of war correspondence, “Holidays in Hell."
