Fargo city leaders voted against the 20% hike despite a city engineer who said the increase is part of a solution to help correct longterm funding issues
While some Fargo city commissioners floated the idea of moving away from special assessments, another considered cutting back on spending and doing less work to right shortages in infrastructure.
“Our partners need to know that they need to cough up some money or there won’t be a bridge… to satisfy their side of the river and their people,” Commissioner John Strand said.
“Our current funding policy isn’t sustainable,” City Engineer Tom Knakmuhs told city commissioners during a presentation on the city's 2024-2027 Capital Improvement Plan.
The now-demolished North Broadway bridge might be replaced after city leaders received updates from a feasibility study that includes three replacement options with increased price tags.
