Members of the Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education got updates on the 2021 legislative session, as well as a look ahead to an expected special session in June, and heard a report on absenteeism for the pandemic school year of 2020-21.
Janna Chenault, elementary school improvement officer, said the overall absence rate is 18.9 percent, with 29.5 percent of those students regarded as “chronic” absentees missing 10 or more days. Looking back to the pre-pandemic school year of 2019-20, those rates, respectively, were 5.39 percent and 13.37 percent. Regardless, capturing attendance rates in a virtual setting was problematic, done basically through participation in Google Meets. ....

Learning Action Buffet aims to create racial equity in education

The Learning Action Buffet’s mission is to support youth in creating a sustainable and healthy community through the arts, communication and action. The LAB accomplishes this by integrating meaningful hands-on learning with real-world problem-solving. The LAB has initiated the Creating Equity in Education project to support the Southern New Mexico Equity Forum. As stated in the newly released Education Context Report from the NMSU Center for Community Analysis In Doña Ana County, Hispanic or Latino persons are twice as likely as white non-Hispanics to lack access to the internet or a computer.
This is just one example of many inequities present in our school system today. Infusing equity into the fabric of the New Mexico educational system will take a concerted effort among all stakeholders, as well as greater awareness about what equity in education looks like and how to achieve it. ....

NMSU STEM Outreach Center to apply for federal funds to support programs

The STEM Outreach Center at New Mexico State University intends to apply for a five-year grant to continue and extend support for school districts in Doña Ana County, Grant County and Hidalgo County beginning in the fall.
The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center grant would support the development of after-school programs in Las Cruces, Hatch, Gadsden, Silver City, Cobre and Lordsburg school districts. These programs provide academic support and enrichment opportunities to support literacy and science, technology, engineering and math learning designed to reinforce topics introduced during the students traditional learning day.
The grant is offered to high need schools through the New Mexico Public Education Department through the national 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. The STEM Outreach Center will partner with the school districts listed above and other organizations such as Ngage New Mexico, Cruces Creatives, STEAMing Ahe ....
