WEST CANAAN Voters in the Mascoma School District’s five towns Enfield, Canaan, Orange, Dorchester and Grafton voted Tuesday to approve the district’s $29.5 million budget for the 2021-22 school year, according to preliminary results.
Residents voted, 1,200-286, to OK the spending plan, which amounts to a 1% increase over the current budget.
The budget includes the reduction of three teaching positions through attrition. The Enfield Village, Canaan Elementary and Indian River schools will each lose an instructor to keeps costs in line with enrollment.
There were no contested races on the district ballot this year. Timothy Josephson ran unopposed for a three-year term representing Canaan on the School Board, while Candace Frye ran to represent Enfield. ....

Hot topic: Mascoma Valley Regional School District voters will be asked to approve a $29.5 million budget for the 2021-22 school year, a less than 1% increase over the current spending plan.
The proposal includes the reduction of three teaching positions through attrition. The Enfield Village, Canaan Elementary and Indian River schools would each lose an instructor to keeps costs in line with enrollment.
If the budget is defeated, a $29.7 million default budget would take effect.
Noteworthy articles: Voters will be asked to appropriate $75,000 for the district’s facilities capital reserve fund and $25,000 for future upgrades to cafeteria equipment. Both would be paid through budget surpluses, not new taxes. ....

The Mascoma Valley was once described as a “food desert” because of the lack of fresh produce markets in the surrounding communities. Some might also have added “internet wasteland” because of uneven high-speed availability.
But, just like Enfield got a boost two years ago in fresh food when Jake’s Market & Deli opened a “mini-supermarket” on Route 4, now a company has arrived in town to boost high-speed internet service. ....
