Today, the European Commission published its Wind Power Action Plan and Communication on offshore renewable energy. The plan contains a number of good initiatives, such as the inclusion of criteria in wind auctions other than just the cost, a focus on skills and more efficient and transparent permitting processes, and better financing through the innovation fund. Unfortunately a lack of attention to reskilling fossil fuel workers and ongoing delays in the Commission guidance on how to accelerate permitting issues mean we still face some headwinds.

After a long night of negotiating, EU co-legislators agreed on the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). The agreement, which bundles both revisions under the Fit for 55 package and RePowerEU, should be the Union s road map towards a renewable future. But WWF believes that the failure to tackle the biomass problem and the gutting of important nature protection rules means a lot of harm will be done along the way.
