Afraid, don t be overly fearful and certainly don t let terrorists change our way of aer of life. a message we ve heard from administrations in both parties over the years since 9/11. but making it clear that they have a robust framework. one other point, kate, in this pen and pad brief, as they call it the next step as you reported, we expect some back and forth around policy. i can tell you, fbi director comey and his staff have been telling reporters and anyone who will listen for months that they re worried about what s called going dark, not getting enough intelligence from encryption, an issue reported on this week, and companies like apple that use technology innovations to prevent the government from getting material even when it does have a warrant. that s not a civil liberties issue but more of a corporate regulation issue. i would not at all be surprised if that issue comes up in the closed door briefing. all right. i want to also bring in the foreign editor for time mag ....

Saying. but in the current climate, it bears repeating. muslim-americans are working every day on the front lines of the fight against radicalization. another challenge is how to strike the right balance of protecting privacy and security. encryption of mobile communications presents a particularly tough problem. we should take the concerns of law enforcement and counterterrorism professionals seriously. they have warned that impenetrable encryption may prevent them from accessing terrorist communications and preventing a future attack. on the other hand, we know there are legitimate concerns about government intrusion, network security, and creating new vulnerabilities that bad actors can and would exploit. so we need silicon valley not to view government as its adversary. we need to challenge our best ....

On people related to the internet to not give up web space to organizations like this. would that the world work so thoroughly and methodically step by step, measure to measure going through things like this. but that s not the case. well, in fact, the clinton state department has been blamed along with the george w. bush state department and the current state department for not being able to counteract the propaganda of isis. i mean, these terror groups have been so much more efficient and proactive and create everybody than any u.s. government agency to get around the internet barriers and to find this end-to-end encryption and telegram was shot down yesterday, but other sites were available. they have just outsmarted us at every turn. and just this latest propaganda video of times square, it s scary, and it s playing into the anti-refugee propaganda ....

Extremism and psychological warfare that frankly when we even show some of these videos is being waged upon all americans, but what we ought to get to as policymakers is how do we get to the root causes? how do we increase intelligence sharing? how do we make sure we look at these vulnerabilities like the visa waiver program not in a way that curtails travel between america, europe and the economic ties but puts an appropriate red flag if people have traveled into the war region. look at areas where we can engage with our not just communication or technology companies. i was a tech guy before i was in politics. this can t be solved in america only in terms of encryption now. you re adding 1,500 mobile apps a day, many of them with encryption, many of them based out of foreign countries. these are the areas that are going to require i think serious policy review. and frankly if we can move away from some of the shrillness and get onto these issues i think it would be appropriate. fair ....
