Microsoft, chip-maker AMD bet big on confidential Cloud computing


Microsoft has announced to extend its confidential computing options available to Azure Cloud customers in partnership with chip-maker AMD.
The company said it will be the first major cloud provider to offer confidential virtual machines on the new AMD EPYC 7003 series processors.
With the third-gen AMD EPYC CPU-backed confidential computing virtual machines (VMs), Azure confidential computing now enables customers to encrypt entire VMs confidentially, enable confidentiality without recompiling code, and benefit from a host of Azure-specific enhancements.
Today you can deliver confidential workloads on Azure with the broadest choice of hardware as well as resources spanning virtual machines, containers, SQL, and beyond, the company said in a statement on Monday. ....

Signal secure messaging app stops working in China
The app has been one of the last US social media platforms that isn t blocked by Chinese censors. Signal has recently seen a surge in users, with over 500,000 downloads in China.
Users of Signal discovered they were unable to access the app without a VPN
Signal s website has been blocked since at least March 15, according to the GreatFire.org website that tracks online censorship in China.
However, the app remains available on app stores in China. The iOS version, which works with Apple technology, had been installed close to 510,000 times to date in China, said research firm Sensor Tower. Android data for the app is unavailable in China.  ....

Authorities in the U.S. have extended the international police crackdown against the Sky ECC cryptophone service by indicting both the parent company s CEO and its main distributor.
Jean-François Eap, CEO of Sky Global, and Thomas Herdman, who authorities say distributed Sky Global devices until December 2020, have both been charged with a conspiracy to violate the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, aka RICO, by running an illicit secret communications network for criminals. They have also been charged with a conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. ....

Judges have refused defendants leave to challenge the admissibility in UK courts of message communications collected by French cyber police from the encrypted phone network EncroChat.  
The Court of Appeal ruled on 3 March 2021 that there was no “point of law of general public importance” that would justify referring the Appeal Court’s decision to allow the intercepted communications to be used as evidence to the Supreme Court. ....

The DOJ has indicted another company for supposedly making it easier for criminals to elude law enforcement. The true target, though, isn t the company whose principals have been indicted, but encryption itself.
A couple of years ago the DOJ decided to bring RICO charges against Phantom Secure, a cellphone provider that catered to the criminal element with uncrackable phones/messaging services built on existing Blackberry hardware/software.
The FBI approached Phantom Secure, asking for an encryption backdoor that would allow it to snoop on its customers. Phantom Secure declined the FBI s advances. Its phones originally marketed to professionals desirous of additional security were soon marketed to criminals, a market sector that truly valued the security options offered by Phantom. ....
