10 N.B. Educators Recognized


The Excellence in Education Awards were awarded during a virtual ceremony on Saturday.
Three of the winners were in the Anglophone South School District: Bridget Miller at Quispamsis Middle School, along with Emily Somers and Scott Legge of St. Stephen High School.
“It’s a great honour to recognize these 10 educators for their determination, passion and incredible dedication to fostering a positive learning environment,” Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Dominic Cardy said in a news release.
“Their commitment to excellence is particularly inspirational during the challenging times we are living due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The awards recognize those who have shown exceptional dedication, ingenuity, leadership, passion and professionalism in the education and early learning systems. ....

Steep Disparities in Lupus, Particularly for BIPOC Women

The latest data on lupus incidence suggests American Indian and Black women are 3 times more likely to have lupus than other U.S. adults.

Lupus rates are 9 times higher in women than men, and are highest among American Indian and Black women, according to new data.
The research provides the first national estimate of how widespread the auto-immune disease is, including its prevalence in certain ethnic groups. Overall, a total of 204,295 people had lupus in 2018 in the United States, according to the study published this month in the journal
For every 100,000 people in the population, there were 72.8 cases of lupus. Lupus rates were 9 times higher for women compared with men, at 128.7 versus 14.6 per 100,000 people; and highest among American Indian, Black, and Hispanic women, at 270.6, 230.9, and 120.7 cases per 100,000 people. There were 84.7 cases of lupus per 100,000 white women. ....

Study pins down number of Americans with most common form of lupus

Just over 200,000 Americans suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, a condition in which the body s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues, especially joints and skin, a new study shows.
Led by a researcher at NYU Grossman School of the Medicine, the study provides the first national estimate of how widespread the autoimmune disease is since the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) set up a half dozen state registries to track the illness more than a decade ago. SLE affects mostly women, can be fatal, and often involves debilitating flare-ups of fatigue and pain that keep nearly half of adult patients from working. ....

Plymouth University of MIchigan epidemiologist explains job


Emily Somers released a good-natured chuckle as she described how her sometimes misunderstood profession has gained a well-deserved uptick in recognition during 2020.
Prior to the pandemic, I think most people thought epidemiologists were skin doctors, quipped Somers, a University of Michigan-based epidemiologist who has lived in Plymouth for close to 20 years. A lot more people understand what we actually do now.
Affectionately referred to by many as disease detectives,  epidemiologists have become behind-the-scenes rock stars of sorts during COVID-19 s horrendous spread across the globe at least for people in the science community who understand the role Somers and her peers are playing. ....
