Matt Hancock urged people not to “give into temptation” as a mutant strain of Covid-19 discovered in the UK plunged millions more under strict new measures.
The Health Secretary tried to remain optimistic as he announced new lockdown measures for vast swathes of the UK from Boxing Day, telling people “there are brighter skies ahead”.
Earlier, one of the Government’s key scientific advisers said the new restrictions were expected to “flatten the curve”.

The rate at which coronavirus is spreading has increased, adding to pressure on ministers to impose Tier 4 lockdowns on more parts of England.
The Cabinet’s Covid operations committee met on Wednesday to consider the latest data on the spread of the virus.
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick acknowledged “it may be necessary to take further action” to curb rising case numbers.

New coronavirus strain may infect children more easily, says scientist on Covid advisory group to UK government

“There is a hint that it has a higher propensity to infect children.. but we haven t established any sort of causality on that, but we can see that in the data.
What we ve seen over the course of a five or six-week period is consistently the proportion of pillar two cases for the variant in under-15s was statistically significantly higher than the non-variant virus.
Prof Ferguson did urge caution around the findings, though, adding that more research would need to be done on the matter before any conclusions should be drawn.
Another NervTag member Prof Wendy Barclay was keen to point out that the advisory group are not saying “this virus specifically attacks children”. ....
