Judge Orders 12-Year-Old Boy To Secure Detention

Daytona Beach, FL – Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge Michael Orfinger ordered 12-year-old Travis O’Brien to be held in secure detention for 21 days this morning (June 3). He found probable cause on a charge of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, along with other charges. O’Brien and 14-year-old Nicole Jackson were involved in a shootout in Enterprise on Tuesday night. Jackson was shot and is reported in stable condition. VSO Releases Video & Discusses Deputy-Involved Shooting O’Brien and Jackson ran away from the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home (FUMCH), before breaking into the home where the shooting occurred. Boy ordered in custody after shooting at deputies with girl

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) A 12-year-old boy accused of joining a 14-year-old girl in a shootout with an assault weapon and shotgun against Florida deputies from a home they had broken into earlier this week will be held for 21 days at a secure detention facility pending a hearing, a judge ordered Thursday.
During a virtual hearing, Judge Michael Orfinger told the boy that he was facing charges of attempted first degree murder of a law enforcement officer and armed burglary of a dwelling.
“I ve reviewed the arrest report and based on my review, there is probable cause that these acts occurred and that you are the person who committed them, Orfinger said. ....

After a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy apparently ran away from a Florida group home and allegedly opened fire on deputies, that home and the juvenile justice system are now under the spotlight.
The children ran away Tuesday evening and then allegedly broke into an empty house, which the homeowner said was stocked with an AK-47, a handgun, a shotgun and a large amount of ammunition, the Volusia County Sheriff s Office said.

Deputies surrounded the home and tried to talk the children into surrendering, but the children started firing from multiple angles, the sheriff s office said. The 12-year-old later told investigators that the 14-year-old had said, I m gonna roll this down like GTA, referring to the video game Grand Theft Auto, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. ....
