Mom's story reflects increase in first-time homelessness in Savannah

Christina Robinet and her five children have lived in roughly 15 Savannah hotels since the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The 28-year-old single mom and her kids, ages 2 to 10  were forced to move from their Savannah rental home in March when Robinet s hours were cut at her housekeeping job at the Courtyard Marriott and she could no longer afford rent. This family spent the first month or so staying in churches at night though Savannah s Interfaith Hospitality Network. Then they left that program and moved to one hotel after another near I-95/Highway 204 and in the Midtown Savannah area. Robinet works as a housekeeper at some of the hotels where they ve lived. But those jobs weren t always steady. She said she hates to admit it, but when she couldn t afford to pay for a room, they spent maybe five or six non-consecutive nights outside.
